The course of 2017 Moves In! Bike racks are all occupied.

The course of 2017 Moves In! Bike racks are all occupied. Lines are a bit that is little again to have food. Publications are being bought. Tools are put away and summer construction has dwindled down (well, the majority of it). Cars filled with boxes of garments and school materials are being directed around campus to halls that are residential. Going carts, student ID cards, and last minute trips to Target; folks, it’s officially Move-In Day.
I was overwhelmed by the energy of the campus as I was walking the campus to take some pictures. Often I forget that I work at a university campus filled with dreamers, innovators, and future global leaders. We found myself simply taking it all in while smiling at students and parents I have never met before. ( It may are a little weird, but hey, I was caught in a minute). Suddenly, I wanted to travel back in time, go back once again to college and experience this all over again!
Yesterday early morning, I saw the look of excitement and awe on the faces of first-year students as these were entering their dorms for the very first time. Subsequently, I sensed an amount that is great of and a bit of hesitation from moms and dads because they struggled to allow their young ones go. It is apparent that this brief moment is really a milestone in all of their lives. Students look ahead to their next four years at USC and wonder at most of the possibilities it could bring, while parents feel a sense of success because they were somewhat responsible to get their kids to college. With all of these thoughts swirling on campus, I’m able to understand why there were so many hugs going around.
throughout the welcome convocation today, speakers endured in front side regarding the incoming class of 2017 and offered advice on how to maximize of their own time here at USC. I’d like to reiterate what Professor Harkness, from the Dornsife university, stated during her message: Be present. It is not as easy in your own life as it sounds but you will be a better human being the sooner you can practice it. To your brand new incoming freshmen at USC and present students; I challenge you to be present. Show up in your classes. Show up in your conversations. Be present when you do your research. Be present when you’re meeting new people. Be current whenever you write your statements that are personal. Be present when you study for the AP/IB tests. Be present when you take the tests. Be there whenever you ask her/him down. Be present in conflict. Be present in brand new challenges. Be present in all of your experiences that are new activities. Take it all in. Be current!

Hey Parents! Listen Up!

Parents play an important role in the entire college process. Often times, parents help subsidize some, if not all, of going to an university or college, and so are always there to ask those specific ‘parent’ questions you need to ask the tour guide when the last meningitis outbreak was? that you as students can’t be bothered with (really mom, did)

However, there are circumstances where parents must take a seat that is back allow their sons and daughters to inquire of the hard concerns. Here, we’ve a compiled an inventory of ‘dos and donts’ about parenting throughout the college search and application process:

Do assist your son or daughter determine what they are searching for in a college, reminding them to consider location, size, academic programs, cost/financial aid, etc. locating a good fit for your specific wants and needs is more important than https://shmoop.pro/1984-by-george-orwell-part-two-summary/ the cachet of the name.

do not gather all the information for them! Allow them to contact admission counselors and discover the relevant information for themselves. After all, they will be in college someplace soon enough, and it is important they learn to navigate the procedure themselves.

Do encourage your sons and daughters to visit university campuses, and include them on those trips! The way that is best to become familiar with an university is always to result in the trip to campus.

Don’t check your sons and daughters in for campus tours, interviews, receptions, etc. Let them do it! This shows us they are independent and mature.

Do remind your sons and daughters that not getting directly into their first option school may seem just like the end associated with world at that minute, but that things work out and as they work hard that they will be successful wherever they go as long. And, encourage them to transfer if that organization remains towards the top of the list even after enrolling somewhere else.

Don’t fill their applications out for them! We can tell also it reflects poorly on the applicant. We know that these are adults using and expect their applications to mention their true vocals and style.

So the moral is: find a balance. Realize that your child is all about to attempt a life-changing journey and that starting to take ownership of the college application procedure is a good jumping off point. But, also rest assured that we are here to answer those tough ‘parent’ concerns, even if they include where you should send the care package.
